Speaking Engagements

I am available to speak to a variety of audiences on a host of topics in a range of formats, from keynote addresses to panel discussions to hands-on workshops.

Speaking topics

Populism, Polarization, Parties, and Public Policy

From our workplaces and neighbourhoods, to our provinces and countries -- the world feels more divided now than ever.  My research investigates the root causes and major effects of polarization at the macro and micro levels.

Topics include:

  • political polarization
  • pluralism and populism
  • hyperpartisanship in Canada
  • democratic backsliding in Canada
  • populist approaches to policymaking
  • engaging division on a personal level

Alberta's Place in Confederation

Grounded in decades of public opinion and political marketing research, my work helps us make sense of Alberta's position in the national and global communities. Beyond western alienation, the province is home to separatist and far-right movements that challenge more than national unity.

Topics include:

  • federalism
  • Alberta provincial politics
  • public opinion and political culture in Alberta
  • western alienation
  • separatism
  • intergovernmental relations
  • youth political socialization

Public Servants' Role

Co-author of The Public Servant's Guide to Government in Canada, I deliver many workshops for municipal, provincial, and federal civil servants. Tailored toward different audiences - from students and newcomers to seasoned executives - these sessions help teams navigate the gray areas between politics and policy, and how to carve a successful career in public service.

Topics include:

  • political acumen
  • how government works
  • career pathing
  • intergovernmental relations
  • the politics of public administration
  • the politics of public policy
